The Fairytale of New York Christmas song was sung by an Irish rock band named the Pogues. Pogue was comes from the Irish language called “póg mo thóin” which is “kiss my arse.” This band comes from King Cross, London in the year 1982 fronted by Shane MacGowan. The band was performing international from the year 80s up to the 90s, but in 1991 MacGowan left the band because of his drinking problem. Nevertheless, the band restored in the year 2001. They had known because of using some traditional Irish instruments such as the Tin whistle, cittern, mandolin and accordion.

The song called “fairytale of New York” performed by the band featuring the late British singer Kirsty MacColl was a big hit in VH1 UK polls in 2004 which was voted as the number one Christmas song ever. Earlier than that, the song had originally planned to have a duet by Shane MacGowan and their bassist Cait O’Riordan, but the bassist left the band in the year 1986, although the song was already been completed before he left. The band chooses Kirsty MacColl to be part on the actual recording because they liked the way she sings the song.
