Isabella Baumfree popularly known as Sojourner Truth was born in Ulster County, New York in 1797. She was a slave by born. After changing several hands, the traders sell her to John Dumont. She marries a fellow slave and gives birth to five children.Traders also sell one of them in Alabama. She wins her son back when the New York abolishes slavery in 1827.
She takes the name ‘Sojourner Truth’ and becomes a traveling preacher. She publishes a book titled ‘The Narrative of Sojourner Truth’ with the help of Olive Gilbert. William Lloyd Garrison writes the introduction of the book.
Over the next few years, she began speaking on woman suffrage. Her most famous speech is ‘Am I not a Woman?’ She organized a campaign against the policy of not allowing blacks to sit beside whites. Therefore, President Abraham Lincoln himself called on her.
